Response 1

I have read two articles about Gen Y and tobacco smoke.
The first article is “Why Gen Y Is Going to Change the Web” which was written by Sarah Perez. In this article, the author discussed the background of Gen Y, like what did the Gen Y’s daily life looks like and Gen Y’s attitude to life. Then, he pointed out the Gen Y’s specialty on technology. At last, the author gave the suggestion about how people especially the bosses to get along with the Gen Y. The purpose of the article may be building an image of Gen Y to people who do not understand them very much. The author first talked about how different the Gen Y’s attitude to life is. He thought that though the Gen Y do not pay too much attention on TV, ad and work which were considered need to be cared about a lot, they concerned about the world wild issues.
I agree about the Perez’s opinion that “Ignoring the voices of Gen Y is something you should do at your own peril, especially if you're a business looking to hire, a company selling a product, or an advertising firm trying to reach them”. Nowadays, a successful company can live without high technology, so it is important for the company to keep the employees who has the knowledge of technology. As Perez said in the article that “science Gen Y grew up on the web, they're going to be the driving force behind the way the web of the future is shaped. Therefore, Gen Y may play an important role in the company. As a result, it is very important for bosses to deal with the relationship with Gen Y employees, or they will lose the resource.
The second article is a highlight sheet which name is “A Report of the Surgeon General: How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease - The Biology and Behavioral Basis for Smoking-Attributable Disease Fact Sheet”. From the report, the author wants smokers and people who exposures to secondhand tobacco smoke that how danger smoking is by listing tobacco-related diseases. Also, the author suggests smokers to make quite plan as early as possible. In this sheet, it includes gave a lot of information about the diseases which caused by smoking and some stereotypes of smoking. For instance, the author pointed that “There is no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke”. Even though a person does not smoke, he or she also will get the disease by exposure to secondhand smoking.
I agree about the author’s opinion that “The only proven strategy for reducing the risk of tobacco-related disease and death is to never smoke, and if you do smoke to quit”. It is very necessary for the smoker to stop smoking. It is not only good for themselves, but also good for the people who are living around them. From the sheet, I know that most of tobacco-related diseases are very harmful to human body. For example, the author claims that “The chemicals and toxicants in tobacco smoke damage DNA, which can lead to cancer” and “Smoking causes about 85% of lung cancers in the U.S”. Also, there has no safe ways to reduced tobacco-related diseases risk. Therefore, the only way to get back a health body is to quit smoking.

  1. Good first post. Did you notice the differences in the writing styles and format of the two readings? Did you wonder why the authors chose to use the language and voice and style that they did?
