Week.14 Writing Journal Prompts2

After the draft conference, I got some useful advice from the professor. My questions are about the back ground design, the idea of the last body paragraph, and the citation.
My goals producing my Webtext are making the paragraphs flow enough and explore my topic well.
From the peer review, I found out that some of my paragraphs might make the read misunderstand my topic and some paragraphs were not flow enough.

Week 14.Writing Journal Prompts 1

My topic is about CEO which connects to the society.  All of our group members have the same topic- social science, so it is easy for me to make my own topic fit into our group webzine. Also, my background color of the index page will fit the background color of the group page.

Week12.Writing Journal Prompts

Reflection of Webtext
For the webtext, Being a Successful CEO, the things that worked not so well for me was to write thesis statement and outline. At the beginning, though I had a topic, it was hard for me to make a fit statement and express my idea clearly. For example, my topic was about some factors which important to a CEO’s success, but I also needed to define what was success. At first, it was hard to make this two points together in on paragraph. At this time, the professor helped me to deal with this problem. Therefore, I followed the professor’s advice to change the stances’ structure and showing my idea in another way. Finally, I over came the problem and organized my idea well.

Week11.Writing Journal Prompts 2

For “Discernment ability” part:
1. The first text is from the Five Marks of a Great Leader. In this article, the author points out 5 things that a successful leader need. The five marks are the moral courage, judgment, sense of priority, disposal and concentration of effort and Humor. The author expatiates how these marks are important to the leader by giving specific examples. I choose this article because it helps me to explain the importance of discernment ability.

2. The second text is from an interview of MCI CEO, Michael Capellas. In the interview, it gives some information about Michael Capellas and Capellas’s opinions of dealing MCI’s problem. It is useful for me to show Capellas’s attitude on his achievement which from his own word.

3. The third text is an introduction of Michal Capellas. It gives reasons that why people need to pay attention on Michal Capellas and make comments on his achievement. From this text, I can show audiences how Capellas use his discernment ability to make big achievements.

Week11 Webtext Prompt1

My topic for the slideshow will be the CEOs who become successful because of having good abilities and CEOs who fail because do not have those abilities. For each kind of ability (using experience, money management, communication, Discernment ability), I will give a real example to explain how does the ability makes a CEO be successful. For instance, when I start to talk about money management, I will show the result of how Carlos Ghosn saved Nissan by using money management. In addition, I will give a picture to show a CEO’s place in a company.

By showing the CEOs, it gives real examples to support the idea of the Webtext. I will use the examples which are mentioned in the Webtext. In the slideshow, I can give more information about those CEOs. Therefore, though some audiences are unfamiliar with those CEOs, they can get some information from the slideshow. For example, when I show Carlos Ghosn’s picture, maybe some audiences do not know him, so I will give some information or story about him.

My slideshow is used for supporting and adding information for the examples from the Webtext. Therefore, the text can become more connected to the real world.

Differences:
1. A podcast has more oral and simple words, so that can make the listener easy to understand the content in a short time. A printed essay has more precise words and will be written in a normal format because it is for academic use.
2. Any kinds of number in a podcast need to be written in words instead of in figures, so that it is easy to say. Figures are used more in a print assay because they are easy to be identified and are convenient for people to read the essay.
3. A podcast has more short sentences because the speaker can easier to show different tone between different sentences. Also, this can give enough time for the speaker to breath.
4. It is necessary to write phrases like “in the end of this podcast” to show the ending and thankful phrases. A printed essay uses these phrases rarely.
5. The sources need to be cited totally in the podcast, so the speaker can cite the sources orally.
Similarities:
1. Bothe texts need to be logical and are written in full structure.
2. Bothe texts need have citation.

Week8.Writing Journal Prompts

My podcast’s topic will about the importance of CEOs’ abilities, and the main point will be CEOs need to attach importance to their abilities and responsibilities from many aspects. According to the date from Consumerist.com that CEO’s salary went up 298.2% while the worker’s salary just went up 4.3% form 1995 to 2005 (2007). This situation means that CEOs’ pay are much higher than workers’. However, different rate of pay is connected with corresponding rate of job, and having more pay requires having more responsibilities. In other word, because CEOs can get much money, they have to take more responsibilities than workers. Therefore, the CEO needs to have high level abilities, so that he or she can do the job in a long term. Having abilities like using experience critically, money management skill, communication skills and discernment ability are important, because these abilities can make a CEO to gain more achievements. According to Research Recap.com, that Booz Allen points out in CEO Succession, “from 1995 to 2006 annual CEO turnover has grown 59%; in that same period, performance-related turnover increased by 318%. In 1995, one in eight departing CEOs was forced from office – in 2006, nearly one in three left involuntarily” (2007). CEO’s replacing is quick. As a result, it is necessary for CEOs to have abilities which can help them to make more achievements, so that they can keep their jobs and become successful in one day.

Week7.Writing Journal Prompts

During the draft conference, we have discussed the 1000-words-draft’s format and its subheading. The format of a Webtext is different form the one which used in essay, so I need change the format and make the text looks more like Webtext. The second thing is about the subheading, like the “Controlling skill”. I need to rewrite the heading to make a clear idea and fit the content. Therefore, I change the subheading into “Money Management Skill”.
After read the feedback from the professor and partner, I know that I have to make some changes.
It is really necessary and important for me to fix my grammar mistakes, so I will go to the writing center to get some help. The second thing is that in the background part, after I point out the fail CEO, I have to write more details.
From the instructor feedback, I know that some sentences which are unclear need to be fixed. Also, I need to make the essay in a logical order.

Week4.Writing

Introduction:
A CEO is the top manager in the company. In other words, the CEO is the most important existence for the company’s survival and development. Nowadays, the competitions between companies are very fierce, and having a successful CEO is very important to a company. Therefore, many companies try their best to find CEOs who have good renown and are capable. However, having renown and being capable dose not mean successful. According to The Worst CEOs In American History, that John Sculley who was hired to be Apple’s CEO in 1983 and Thomas Edison are considered worst CEOs (McIntyre, 2010). I think a successful CEO not only needs knowledge, but also know how to make the company become successful, For this reason, I choose my topic to be What influences can some factors have on becoming a successful CEO and focusing on how a CEO who have these factors without knowledge to make a successful career.

Rationale:
I choose this topic for 3 reasons. First, being a student who is majoring in management, manager is a position that I have paid close attention for a long time for my future career. As Ibarra and Hansen pointed in Do We Celebrate the Wrong CEOs, that CEOs always be considered getting much admiration (2009). There has many CEOs, however, just a few of them can be successful and well-known, so I am interested in how to get the admiration. Second, I choose to talk about CEO because a CEO is the top manager in the company. In other words, the CEO is the most important existence for the company’s survival and development. What they do may affect the company a lot. I am wondering how a CEO’s ability can influence the company exactly. The reason for me to write about how a CEO can make a successful company instead of write what factors can make a CEO become successful is because a CEO’s success is depended on his contribution in the work. Therefore, the factors that made a CEO manage a company successful are similar to the factors that help a CEO get success. The audience may be the student who chooses CEO to be the future job and people who want to learn manage skills.

Methodology:
To write the article, I need to know what factors that a CEO’s need to have to manage the company. Therefore, I plan to look up the best CEO list in business report, news paper and find information about those CEOs’ strong points. Than I can explore how these points affect a CEO’s work and why they are important. I will use the Internet to check the basic work for CEO and the some special things that those CEOs’ do. Also, I plan to find some report about the successful CEO in business magazine and use some information from the scholarly journals.

Detailed plan:
In the beginning of my article, I will explain a CEO’s basic job, importance to the company. Later, I will talk about the connection between a CEO’s success and a company’s success. Then, I will explore how some specific factors (responsibility, work experience professional skills and discernment ability) affect a CEO’s work and why these factors are important by giving positive and negative examples from the news report (Web/ print text, picture). Finally, I will make a conclusion that how these factors are more necessary than knowledge to a CEO to get success in the career.

Preliminary conclusion:
These days, some companies employ successful CEOs, like Steve Jobs and Gareth Davis (Hansen, Ibarra, Peyer). In contrast, sometimes the result is not satisfactory. For example, the CEOs in GM and BP were fired because of their failed management. The companies have changed their CEOs to deal with the companies’ failure. As John Carver said in Boards in Nonprofit and Public Organization, that “If something goes wrongs in the organization, there is only one person at whom the board can point”(2006). Maybe there have some other things cause the failure, the CEO needs to respond for all the bad results, so it is very important for a CEO to know how to manage the company. Though having high education certificate is important and for the CEO, other factors which connect to the real world, like having good sense of responsibility, work experience, professional skills and discernment ability are also important in the process of managing company.

Response 1

I have read two articles about Gen Y and tobacco smoke.
The first article is “Why Gen Y Is Going to Change the Web” which was written by Sarah Perez. In this article, the author discussed the background of Gen Y, like what did the Gen Y’s daily life looks like and Gen Y’s attitude to life. Then, he pointed out the Gen Y’s specialty on technology. At last, the author gave the suggestion about how people especially the bosses to get along with the Gen Y. The purpose of the article may be building an image of Gen Y to people who do not understand them very much. The author first talked about how different the Gen Y’s attitude to life is. He thought that though the Gen Y do not pay too much attention on TV, ad and work which were considered need to be cared about a lot, they concerned about the world wild issues.
I agree about the Perez’s opinion that “Ignoring the voices of Gen Y is something you should do at your own peril, especially if you're a business looking to hire, a company selling a product, or an advertising firm trying to reach them”. Nowadays, a successful company can live without high technology, so it is important for the company to keep the employees who has the knowledge of technology. As Perez said in the article that “science Gen Y grew up on the web, they're going to be the driving force behind the way the web of the future is shaped. Therefore, Gen Y may play an important role in the company. As a result, it is very important for bosses to deal with the relationship with Gen Y employees, or they will lose the resource.
The second article is a highlight sheet which name is “A Report of the Surgeon General: How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease - The Biology and Behavioral Basis for Smoking-Attributable Disease Fact Sheet”. From the report, the author wants smokers and people who exposures to secondhand tobacco smoke that how danger smoking is by listing tobacco-related diseases. Also, the author suggests smokers to make quite plan as early as possible. In this sheet, it includes gave a lot of information about the diseases which caused by smoking and some stereotypes of smoking. For instance, the author pointed that “There is no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke”. Even though a person does not smoke, he or she also will get the disease by exposure to secondhand smoking.
I agree about the author’s opinion that “The only proven strategy for reducing the risk of tobacco-related disease and death is to never smoke, and if you do smoke to quit”. It is very necessary for the smoker to stop smoking. It is not only good for themselves, but also good for the people who are living around them. From the sheet, I know that most of tobacco-related diseases are very harmful to human body. For example, the author claims that “The chemicals and toxicants in tobacco smoke damage DNA, which can lead to cancer” and “Smoking causes about 85% of lung cancers in the U.S”. Also, there has no safe ways to reduced tobacco-related diseases risk. Therefore, the only way to get back a health body is to quit smoking.

About college life

Being an international student and freshman, at the first day of college, I was full of curiosities about the new teaching and learning style, college life and cultural. Also, I had a strong desire to get a high score in the end of each semester. I had learned most of the background knowledge for the classes, so I thought I could do well in these classes. Because the teaching style is different from high school, I knew that I needed to learned how to management time and make plan. Besides, in the beginning, I still am conditioned to follow the teacher’s direction and being dependent.
